A Belém Afternoon That Ends on a Lisbon Sunset Sail

Belém is where most of the river's landmarks stand, and where several boats leave from, so the easiest way to plan a sunset sail in Lisbon is to spend the afternoon there first. The catch is the clock: the monuments close at 17:30, and the sun sets from about 17:15 in December to about 21:00 in July.

How does a Belém day end on a boat?

You spend the afternoon on foot among the monuments, eat something, then walk to the dock and sail as the light goes. From the water you see the same buildings again, lit gold from the west, and the crew tell you what you walked past.

It works because the Belém docks sit right beside the sights. Doca de Belém is a few minutes from the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, and the Bom Sucesso marina is a short walk west, towards Belém Tower. You never need a taxi between the last monument and the boat.

What time does the sail leave?

The operator times each sunset departure to the season, and your confirmation gives the exact start. What matters for your day is the gap between the monuments closing and the sun going down.

In summer you have hours to fill after the monuments close. In deep winter the sun is down before they shut, so sail on one day and do the monuments on another. Our post on sunset times by month has every month.

How do you get to Belém?

Tram 15E runs from Praça da Figueira through the riverside square and Cais do Sodré to Belém, stopping at Alcântara, Santo Amaro, MAAT and the monastery on the way. Carris's weekday timetable shows a tram about every ten minutes through the day.

A taxi or ride-hail works too. If your boat meets at the red-flag van, type "Doca do Bom Sucesso" into the app rather than the avenue, as the operator asks. The visitors guide covers the train from Cais do Sodré as well.

Getting back is just as easy. The boats return to the dock they left from, and tram 15E runs from Belém back through Santo Amaro, Alcântara and Cais do Sodré into the centre. Carris's weekday timetable lists trams well past midnight, so a late summer sail does not strand you, though a taxi is quicker after dark.

What fits before a two-hour sail?

The Jerónimos Monastery opens 9:30 to 17:30, with last entry at 17:00, and closes on Mondays. Belém Tower opens Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 to 17:30, and a ticket costs €15. Together they are one UNESCO World Heritage property, inscribed in 1983.

MAAT, on the waterfront east of the monument, opens Wednesday to Monday from 10:00 to 19:00. The Padrão itself, 56 metres tall and rebuilt in 1960, is worth a walk round even from the outside.

What will you see again from the water?

Almost everything you walked past. Belém Tower was built between 1514 and 1519 on a basalt outcrop some distance from the north bank, and from a boat you see it as it was meant to be seen, standing out in the river. The monastery shows its long south front, and the monument's 32 figures lean out towards you over the water.

What if it rains on your Belém day?

Summer is almost always dry: IPMA's normals give Lisbon 0.6 days of rain in July and 1.2 in August. Winter is wetter, with 9.8 rain days in November and 11.1 in December.

On a wet day the monastery and MAAT are both indoors, so the afternoon still works. The boat is the part at risk: the operator may cancel for rain or wind, and then you choose another date or a full refund. Keep a dry day later in your trip for the sail if you can.

Where do you eat?

No sunset sail here serves dinner. You get a drink, snacks on some boats and a cheese board on a couple, so eat properly before or after.

Lunch in Belém before the monuments is the easy option. After a late summer sail, most people head back into town for dinner, since the boats return to the dock they left from. The Bom Sucesso van waits between a filling station and the Vela Latina restaurant, which is useful if you arrive hungry.

Which Belém dock is yours?

Doca de Belém and the Bom Sucesso marina are a short walk apart, and people do go to the wrong one. Check your booking for the gate and the landmark.

What if the wind cancels the sail?

If the operator cancels for weather, you are offered another date or a full refund. Some boats also cancel when too few people book, on the same terms.

So book your Belém day early in your trip, when there are evenings left to move it to. If the boat is cancelled on the day, MAAT is open until 19:00 except on Tuesdays, and the riverside itself makes a fine sunset walk.

Look at the forecast the evening before. A very windy day is as likely to stop a sail as a wet one, and the operator usually decides on the day, so keep your phone on and check the number on your confirmation.

Can you start at Santo Amaro or Alcântara instead?

Yes, and it can make the day easier. Doca de Santo Amaro sits under the bridge, about 2 km east of the Padrão, and Doca de Alcântara is a little further on. Tram 15E stops at both on its way back into town.

Starting there means doing Belém first, then riding the tram or walking east to the boat. The wine-and-history sail and the catamaran leave from Santo Amaro, and the Alcântara sailboats from Gates 1 and 2.

What should you carry for the whole day?

You will walk for hours, then sit on an open deck as it cools, so pack for both. A small backpack is easier than a big bag on a boat, and you may be asked to stow it below.

• Flat shoes with soft soles: good on cobbles, and some boats ban high heels.
• A warm layer: the way back is colder than the afternoon, even in July.
• Sunglasses: you sail towards a low sun.
• Photo ID: one sailboat asks for a passport or ID card.
• A little cash: for a tip, if you want to leave one.

What are the Monday and Tuesday traps?

On a Monday the monastery and the tower are both closed, so a Belém afternoon shrinks to MAAT and the waterfront. On a Tuesday MAAT is closed but the monuments are open.

Wednesday to Sunday everything is open. If Monday is your only free day, sail from Santo Amaro or downtown instead, and give Belém another day. The weather by month and the best time to sail help you pick the month.
