Ten guests under the bridge

Lisbon Fun Sail keeps its sailboats to ten guests, with a captain at the helm and a mate who helps with the sails and the glasses. The boat leaves from Doca de Santo Amaro, the marina that sits directly under the 25 de Abril Bridge, so the first thing you see when you look up is the red steel of the road deck. With ten aboard there is room to sit where you like and to ask the captain anything.

At $34 a person, this is one of the lowest fares for two hours on a sailboat, and it is the sail that owns the idea of Lisbon at sunset with a glass of wine. The other boats that pour wine through the evening are set side by side on Lisbon sunset and wine sailing tours.

Portuguese wine and port

The fare includes white wine, port wine or soft drinks. The operator's own welcome note also says you can bring your own snacks and drinks on board, which is not true of every boat on the river, so pack a picnic if you want food with the wine. Red wine is banned on some other boats; nothing in this fare mentions it either way.

How much is poured is not fixed in the fare. Travellers describe the mate keeping glasses filled at a good pace, and several write about the wine as part of what they paid for, but treat it as generous rather than bottomless.

The history your captain tells

The captains are the reason this sail rates as it does. They speak English and Spanish, and the story runs west to east along the waterfront. You pass MAAT, the museum on the Belém riverfront, which closes on Tuesdays if you plan to visit afterwards. Then come Belém Tower and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, rebuilt in concrete and stone in 1960 with 32 figures from the age of the navigators climbing its ramps. Back under the bridge, Praça do Comércio opens up from the water, and Alfama climbs the hill above it.

The sails go up when the wind allows, and the wind decides for how long. With a steady breeze you may sail almost the whole way; on an evening when the summer north wind blows hard, the crew may keep the sails down for part of the trip. Either way the route and the stories are the same.

Only the last slot is the sunset

This is the fact most worth knowing before you book. The operator runs several departures a day, and only the last one is timed for the sunset. Some travellers wish that had been clearer when they booked, so check the start time on your date. Your two hours on the river, step by step

1. Find Gate 1. Walk past the restaurants at Santo Amaro and turn left to the gate by the tennis courts.
2. Board and pour. White wine, port or a soft drink as you leave the marina.
3. Under the bridge. Straight out beneath the road deck of the 25 de Abril Bridge.
4. West along Belém. MAAT, Belém Tower and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos from the water.
5. East to the old city. Praça do Comércio from the river, with Alfama above it.
6. Back to the marina. About two hours after you left, under the bridge once more.

What's in the fare

Finding Gate 1 at Santo Amaro

Meet at Gate 1 of Doca de Santo Amaro, in front of the tennis courts and directly beneath the bridge. From the road, walk past the row of restaurants and turn left to reach the gate. If you come by taxi or ride-hailing app, give Doca de Santo Amaro as the destination and walk the last stretch; traffic along the river can be heavy at the end of the day, so leave time.

Know before you go

• Pick the last slot for the sunset. Earlier departures are daytime sails; check the start time on your date.
• Arrive 15 minutes early. Check-in happens at the gate, not on the boat.
• Bring a warm layer. It turns cold after sunset; blankets are on board too.
• Board unaided. You need to step aboard safely with minimal help.
• Pack snacks if you want them. Food is not in the fare, and you may bring your own.
• Expect the wind to decide. Too little or too much, and part of the trip may be under motor.
